ODM leaders have come out guns blazing after armed police stormed Governor James Ongwae’s Kisii Town residence on allegations that they were holding an illegal meeting.
Ongwae says police demanded that he cancel his planned dinner meeting with area Senator Prof Sam Ongeri and Woman Representative Janet Ongera.
“I requested them to withdraw from my compound but insisted that the leaders must leave. They said they were sent by a senior government official in the Ministry of Interior.”
According to Ongwae, police had been harassing the ODM candidate in Bonchari for a couple of days now. “An election is a democratic process that electorates should be allowed to participate in. It should be fair and free.”
Ms Ongera and Prof Ongeri say they have been pushed way far and that they will not take it lightly.
“I have been in government way too long. I have never seen such characters that behave as if they own this country,” said Prof Ongeri.
Ms Ongera called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene and allow Kenyans to participate in a free and fair election.
ODM party Secretary General Edwin Sifuna said that desperate times call for desperate measures. “Desperate and unorthodox responses have been directed at our party candidate and the entire ODM campaign team.”
He said: “The foregoing is not an isolated incidence. Last evening, a businessman in Kisii town was arrested on the accusation that he was supporting an ODM candidate. He is still in police custody.”
Sifuna explained that they have it on authority that their candidate’s meetings were being disrupted, a top national government official was holed up in a secret meeting with some senior operatives.
