Kieni residents benefit from life-changing water tanks project

Kieni

Kieni, Kenya – In a major step towards ending water scarcity, residents of drought-prone Nairutia, Kieni, have received 5,000-litre water tanks.

The Mutitu Water Project distributed the tanks to its first group of 100 members. This initiative promises to change the lives of many families. Importantly, the project aims to promote rainwater harvesting and sustainable farming practices in Nyeri County’s arid and semi-arid regions.

According to Chairman Joseph Kagiri, the tanks will help residents move from rain-fed farming to reliable irrigation systems.

“This region faces drought, water scarcity, and poor sanitation. These tanks will allow families to store rainwater efficiently,” Kagiri explained.

Additionally, residents can now establish kitchen gardens to grow their own food. They will rely less on food donations during dry seasons. Although the first phase targets 100 members, the project plans to expand and reach 6,000 members across Nyeri, Laikipia, and Nyandarua counties.

Affordable Loans Through Caritas Microfinance Bank

The tanks were provided through a key partnership between Mutitu Water Project and Caritas Microfinance Bank. Through this collaboration, members can acquire a tank worth Ksh.27,000 and repay the loan within 18 months.

Kagiri emphasized the benefits of the partnership. “Many farmers cannot afford upfront payments. With kitchen gardens, they can repay their loans easily,” he said.

Moreover, farmers are expected to sell surplus produce from their gardens, creating an extra income stream to support loan repayment.

Beneficiaries Share Their Joy

Mary Mithaa, one of the first beneficiaries, expressed excitement about the project. “The tank will ease my daily burden,” she said.

She added, “Now, I can store enough water for domestic use and farming, even during the dry season.”

Similarly, dairy farmer John Chege praised the project. “The tank ensures my livestock and family always have clean drinking water,” he noted.

Building a Resilient Future for Kieni

With climate change causing unpredictable rainfall, water storage solutions are now critical for survival and prosperity. The Mutitu Water Project offers a sustainable response to the region’s growing water challenges. Reliable water access will improve farming, boost food security, and enhance the livelihoods of hundreds of families.

Finally, the Mutitu Water Project is seeking more partners and funding to expand its impact across Kenya’s drought-prone areas.
