Inspector General Douglas Kanja urged all road users to approach this festive season with a changed behaviour to reduce the number road accidents. He indicated that there has been an increase of road accidents this year resulting to an increase in Deaths which he termed as alarming. .
At least 4,282 people have been killed in accidents reported this year compared to 4,090 killed in the same period of January to November in 2023.He stated that these were not just statistics but human lives were being affected in road accidents.
“Yet, most of these accidents are caused by preventable human factors, especially non-compliance with traffic rules and regulations. Evidently, road traffic accidents tend to increase during festive seasons, and already, we are seeing an increase in road traffic accidents this year.”
Together with the multi- agency the inspector general will collaborate with National Transport and Safety Authority to ensure compliance of road safety on major highways also in partnership with the Ethics and Anti corruption to prevent corruption during the festive season.
The police will be deployed in specialized units including all female special weapons and tactics team (SWAT) alongside with Genaral Duty Police to heighten surveillance in major towns.
All road users must comply with traffic regulations, avoid operating unroad worthy motor vehicles,and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
The public has been called upon to be alert during the festive season and report any crime through the police 999, 911 and 112.
