A Football Kenya Federation (FKF) allied referee has been killed at Gesabakwa area Nyaribari Masaba Kisii in an altercation with a football fan.
John Okwoyo was pronounced dead moments after he arrived at Gesusu Sub County Hospital where he was rushed to for emergency medical attention.
It is not clear on what transpired during the football match between Inchuni Youth and Aspire FC, a match that the deceased had been contracted to officiate as a referee.
One of the fans who attended the match, Jairus Ombogo says one of the players was injured and had called for help from the bench. One of the players came in to assist the injured but soon after an altercation insured.
“The argument inside the field led to a fight between the referee and one of the players. He fell and collapsed.”
According to the County FKF Chairman Jezreel Mbegere, the match had not been sanctioned or affiliated to FKF.
“The tournament was going on without our knowledge. It went on against the set rules and regulations. The Ministry of Sports has not given us leeway to begin grassroots football games.”
“We condole with the bereaved family and warn all those planning such games to get clearance from FKF. For now, we have not sanctioned any football match.”
