One person has died after the walls of a gold mine caved in on him in Siaya County.
The deceased, George Otieno Odula, was prospecting for gold when the shaft buried him alive.
Area chief George Odhiambo said the incident happened at Siandha village in Ramula, Gem Wagai Sub County.
His fellow miners rushed to the scene in efforts to rescue him but their efforts were futile.
“The operation lasted about six hours. We tried to rescue him in vain. We later retrieved his body,” one miner said.
The body of the deceased was moved to Yala sub-county hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
