Police officer to undergo Mental Assessment Before Taking a Plea

Police Constable Bonface Maubi will spend a week behind bars before facing a possible murder
charge.
Maubi appeared before Kisii Deputy Registrar Dorcas Mac'Andere on Thursday but couldn't take
a plea.
Hillary Kaino, the lead prosecution counsel requested to have the accused detained for one week.
During the period, the suspect will be allowed to have a mental assessment done at the Kisii
Teaching and Referral Hospital.
He will appear before the court on January 7, 2021. Maubi will then be allowed to plea should
the hospital declare him mentally fit.
On Wednesday, Director of Prosecutions ordered police to arrest and charge Maubi for the
offence of murder.
The arrest follows a complaint that was made at Kisii Police station, that one Bramwell Jimmy
Chukunza, 28 and now deceased, had been arrested together with his colleague Wycliffe Omondi
Okoko, 35.
The two were placed in custody at Kisii police Station on December, 19 and that they had were
assaulted by a police officer, which led Chakunza's death.

The deceased died while undergoing treatment in one of the private Hospitals in Kisii town.
Detectives from the Internal Affairs Unit Headquarters had opened an investigation file and
submitted the findings to the ODPP.
