Deputy Governor Ahmed Muktar is set to be sworn in today as Wajir governor.
According to a gazette notice today, the ceremony was scheduled to take place at 10 am at Wajir county headquarters.
This comes following the impeachment of Mohammed Abdi who was the governor.
Abdi was impeached on Monday night after at least 25 senators voted in favour of the ouster motion.
Two senators voted contrary to the motion whereas four abstained.
The impeachment takes effect instantly, although Abdi can petition the verdict in court.
Abdi’s prior request to the senators to be sympathetic and humane and spare his job was not successful.
“I wish to plead with the senators to be sympathetic, not impeach me just because of one issue. It can be a violation of the Constitution but it is not a gross violation,” he remarked.
“Impeachment is in our laws. However, in my opinion, the impeachment before the house does not meet the threshold. What the committee has sad is that health was an impeachable issue but it cannot amount to gross violation of the Constitution.”
A committee commended the Senate to advocate for his impeachment for risking the lives of residents in terms of the healthcare system.
The 11-member impeachment committee discovered that although the county assembly disbursing Sh2.4 billion to the sector, health facilities are in bad shape which is a gross violation of Article 43(1) of the Constitution.
