At least 13 killed after Kabul Airport explosion

At least 13 people have lost their lives after a suspected suicide bomb exploded outside Kabul Airport yesterday.

According to a Taliban official, many wounded men, women and children were awaiting treatment outside a hospital.

Several Taliban guards were also hurt.

A United States official also affirmed that U.S. service members were among the individuals who were wounded.

However, he said that he was referring to an initial report and it was bound to change.

Most U.S. officials termed the blast a ‘suicide attack.’

The Pentagon confirmed the explosion.

The explosion occurred at the Abbey Gate entrance where British troops have been stationed for the past few days.

The troops were racing to evacuate foreigners and Afghans who helped Western countries during the 20-year war against the Taliban and also, to get themselves out by the end of August.

The Abbey Gate was one of three gates that had been closed followings warnings of a terrorist threat.

According to an Afghan journalist Bilal Sarwary, the explosion occurred in a sewage canal where Afghan refugees’ visa documents were vetted.

U.S. President Joe Biden was briefed on the developments while in a meeting with security officials.

It has since been reported that at least two attackers were involved.
