Bar attendant shot dead as locals protest the death of a man in police custody

Police in Kisii have been accused of having beaten to death a Boda Boda rider who had been arrested for violating COVID-19 measures.

The deceased was arrested on Wednesday evening by police officers attached to Rioma Police Station in Kitutu Chache North.

Achando Kerongo was later taken to Kisii Law court and charged with a traffic offence. He was fined Sh 8,000 or an alternative of three months in prison.

Kisii County Police Commander Francis Kool says the deceased died at Marani Sub County Hospital where he had been taken to by police officers.

“We are investigating the matter and the normal process will be followed.”

Linet Achando, the deceased’s wife said her husband left home on Wednesday morning for his usual Boda Boda business.

 

“He was not sick. I spoke to him after he left court. It was clear that he had been beaten while in police custody.”

Following Kerongo’s death, locals stormed the police leading to the shooting of three more people. Among the three was a female bar attendant who died shortly after she arrived at Marani Sub County Hospital.

Two others are still admitted at Kisii Teaching and Referal Hospital.

The hospital’s Head of Clinical Services Dr Bina Ongaki says one of the victims has a bullet wound on his back while the other had a bullet go through his neck.

Currently, locals and police are engaged in running at Rioma market.
