A Brazilian woman and her two children were rescued by police following 17 years of captivity by her husband.
The family was rescued from a house in the Guaratiba neighborhood, in the west of Rio de Janeiro on Thursday following a mysterious tipoff.
According to Rio Police military the children aged 19 and 22 were tied up, soiled and starved.
The mother also claimed that they would sometimes go up to three days without food. In pictures published by Brazilian media, the adult children looked like adolescents due to their malnutrition.
She also said that her husband identified as Luiz Antonio Santos Silva had told her that she would leave the house only when ‘she was dead’.
The suspect who neighbors nicknamed DJ because he would turn up the music to mask the screams of his victims has been apprehended.
