COVID-19 claims life of accomplished Gusii peace negotiator

When the drafters of history finally sit down to document all the deeds of Gusii notables, no one would disaffirm the fact that outstanding Protus Nyasera Ooro deserves a well-written chapter.

Nyansera, the Vice Chairman of the Abagusii Culture and Development Council died barely a week after he lost his son, Edwin Omunywa and wife, Mariana Nyansera.

Both Nyasera and his wife are believed to have died due to COVID-19 related complications at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

Nyansera was a celebrated gentleman, an educationist, gifted orator, patient and skilful peace negotiator.

A man whose incredible leadership prowess hit a crescendo when President Uhuru Kenyatta, during Mashujaa Day Fete at Gusii Stadium on October 20, 2020, decorated him with the Head of State’s Commendation (HSC).

“I have lost a wonderful father. Our family was always richer with his flawless leadership,” said Nyasera’s eldest child Pamela.

Early November, he felt unwell prompting the family to seek medical attention at a private hospital in Kisii town, where he was later admitted.

The situation worsened and was later transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialized treatment. He was admitted to the Infectious Diseases Unit.

The late Protus Nyasera served as a Kanu Chairman in the Bonachari Constituency as well as an assistant National Treasurer of Ford People party under the leadership of retired politician Simon Nyachae.

The love between Nyasera and his wife was so immense that they followed each other as they did in life-they got admitted to the hospital the same day.

Nyasera and his wife Mariana later the two died on the same week.

Family members describe the late Mariana as a flawless mother who played a fundamental role in the upbringing of younger siblings.

Her younger brother David Onyonka says the death will be felt for many years to come. For more than 30 years she served various health facilities as a nurse.

At the age of 20, Mariana was married to the late husband Nyasera and was blessed with five children.

Today, the couple will be buried at the Bomwanda Nyakungu home in Kisii South.

Their son was laid to rest a week ago.
