The Dedan Kimathi University main campus in Nyeri has been shut down until further notice.
This comes after a students’ riot due to the increase of fees.
According to Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ndirangu Kioni, in a memo to all students, the University Senate suspended all in-person learning due to the disturbance yesterday.
“All the students should therefore vacate the main campus immediately and not later than 1.00 pm today, ” the University VC said. “Further communication will follow.”
Footage captured displayed students demonstrating outside the school while others were blocking the road heading to the university.
This comes barely a week after University of Nairobi students along University way and Uhuru Highway over the same reason – fee increment.
Police dispatched teargas to disperse the riot.
They also guard all the entrances of the main campus to prevent the students from getting out and taking the demo to the streets.
Some students ended up being arrested in the process.
UoN Vice-Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama, however, defended the institution’s action saying the fee issue had been approved and they were just upholding it.
