Expectant Woman Spared Jail Term After Pleading Guilty

Kemunto [not her real name] knew that for the next two years Shimo la Tewa will be her knew home. She pleaded guility before the magistrate for an offence of attempting murder.

Fate was on her side as she was spared the jail term. Shanzu principal magistrate Yusuf Shikanda said she needs counseling rather than imprisonment.

Section 226 of the Penal Code stipulates that a person who attempts to kill himself or herself is guilty of a misdemeanor and can be imprisoned for up to two years or fined or both.

On 25th March Kemunto had had enough in her life and the only option was to take her life, she tied a lesso on a tree ready to hang herself.

Before the lesso could squeeze her life ,she was rescued and taken back home whereby she was advised together with her husband to visit the police station for help.

After explaining to the police why they were at the station, the woman was arrested and detained. On Thursday last week, the woman was arraigned in a Shanzu court to face the criminal charge of attempted suicide.

She told the court that her husband impregnated her and refused to take her to college that’s why she wanted to take her life .

The matter will be mentioned on May 19 for a report on the progress of the counselling.
