I received Shs 150k bribe from the Governor’s office -Siaya MCA

A Siaya MCA has revealed that he accepted a bribe from the Governor’s office to cover up corruption matters within the county.

The revelation by West Asembo MCA Ambrose Akuno, surfaced a few days after Siaya County Assembly Speaker George Okode tried to defend the MCAs over bribery allegations.

During a press conference at the County Assembly last week, Mr Okode declined bribery claims, adding that those were just rumours.

Earlier on, a list had been circulating online of a section of Siaya MCAs who had allegedly received bribes of up to Shs 290,000 each to cover up on alleged misappropriation of at least Shs 600million.

The West Asembo MCA who has been in hospital claims he was handed Shs 150,000.

Mr Akuno adds that he was visited at the hospital by some of his colleagues and handed the cash.

He thought the money was a contribution to support his medication but later realized that it was part of the bribe handed to his colleagues.

He says that he suspects the move was a trick to silence him as he is the most vocal on corruption issues.

The MCAs were allegedly given bribes after they refused to pass the County’s Appropriation Bill for the year 2020/2021.

This came after no explanation was availed as to why bursaries had not been released, Project Management Committee (PMC) monies not paid and statutory deductions not cancelled.
