This day is dedicated to celebrating and recognizing the various achievements that are gained by women across different economic, social, political and cultural spheres.
The day also serves as a reminder of the requirement to continually strive for gender-based equality and to promote social modification.
The activities which are included in the celebrations are acknowledging the achievements of women, advocating for women’s rights and assisting companies dedicated to women’s causes.
Each year, the day is celebrated under a particular theme. This year the theme of International Women’s Day 2024 is “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress”.
The selected theme highly emphasises the critical role of investing in women’s education, economic empowerment, healthcare, and the development of leadership to accelerate progress towards gender equality.
Through the investment in women their individual opportunities and livelihoods are easily increased and also drives positive social and economic outcomes for societies and nations.
The origin of this day can be traced back to the early 20th century. The day is marked by women’s movements advocating for the effective working conditions, social equality, and suffrage.
Today this special occasion is celebrated by more than hundred countries globally, serving as a reminder of the progress gained in the fight for gender equality while also putting light on the persistent challenges and inequalities that women continue to face.
