Septuagenarian accused of defiling two-year-old placed in police custody

Police in Kisii are holding a 72-year-old man who was on Thursday arrested for allegedly
defiling a two-year-old toddler in Marani Sub County.
The suspect is said to have escaped lynching from angry villagers. He had attempted to flee the
scene.
The suspect is alleged to have defiled the minor immediately when the mother left for the market
to buy some vegetables.
A police report seen by our reporter indicates that the victim was taken to Kegogi Level Three
hospital where she is recuperating.
The report says that the mother returned and found the child lying on the ground crying and
bleeding.
“She raised the alarm and members of the public responded. Through the help of the village
elder, they arrested the suspect and handed him over to the police,” reads part of the report.
The suspect was also later admitted to the same hospital for injuries he sustained from the public
beating.
Kisii has been experiencing an increasing number of sexual offences cases. In some of the cases,
suspects end up killing victims.
In July 2019, two girls aged four and nine were defiled and killed in Kenyenya Sub County. One
suspect was arrested and charged in Court.
On April 15, the same year, a bruised body of Judy Mokeira a standard eight girl at Kionganyo
Primary was found dumped in a thicket near her home in Kisii Central Sub County.
She is said to have left home the previous day at around 6 pm without announcing her itinerary
and never to return.
Her body had visible bruises on the head and blood oozing from the nose. She also had
bloodstains on her clothes with police investigations indicating that she had been defiled.
On May 27, 2019, the body of a 10-year-old girl Judith Ombati was found dumped a few meters
from their house at Nyaura village in Nyaribari Chache.
Her twin brother, with whom she shared a bed, only realised her sister was missing when she
was long gone.
Judith’s killers are said to have used socks to strangle her after they had defiled her. They later
put her body on a stone at the nearby riverbank.
In April 2018, a nine-year-old girl was defiled and killed in Chitago village, South Mugirango.

The body of the Standard three girl was found dumped in a bush less than 13 hours after she had
gone missing from her home.
The girl did not return home after she was sent to collect milk from her aunt’s house a short
distance away.
Her body was recovered less than a kilometre from her home after villagers found a handwritten
anonymous note on the roadside describing the direction where the body could be found and the
names of suspects.
Two suspects were later arrested and charged at Kisii High Court for murder and defilement.
