Tonga Omonuri SDA boarding primary school has been closed indefinitely following a second fire incident.

The school had another fire incident two weeks ago went up in flames again on Sunday night when a fire destroyed a section of boys dormitory that hosts 151 learners.

The fire started about 7:45 pm Sunday when learners were in their classes for evening studies.

A class 8 pupil fell and was injured during a stampede and injured her lower back. She was rushed to the Nyamira County Referral Hospital for treatment.

Due to this second incident, the school headteacher Charles Ombui has been transferred.

Nyamira County Commissioner Amos Mariba said the fire was contained and investigations have begun to ascertain the cause of the fire incidents in a short period.

“The cause of the fire has not yet been established but police officers have started investigations into the matter. The injured pupil also is faring on well in hospital,” said Mariba.

Mariba also noted that property of unknown value had been already destroyed.

“The fire engine from the county government and residents moved and managed to contain the fire from causing more damage,” he added.
