11 Dead As Bus Collides With Lorry In Ahero, Kisumu

Eleven people died on Monday morning following an accident involving a bus and a lorry at Othoo area in Nyando sub-county along the Kisumu – Nairobi Highway.

Nyanza Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Allan Mwangi confirmed the 2:30 a.m incident saying a total of 53 passengers suffered injuries.

Among the 11 who died were two women, 8 men and a teenage boy.

Reports about the incident indicate that the bus rammed into a lorry ferrying sugar along the Ahero-Awasi road at the Othoo centre while trying to overtake.

The Kenya Red Cross who responded to the emergency reported that multiple injured individuals have been taken to Ahero Sub-county Hospital while critical cases were transferred to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.

While confirming the case, Super Metro Sacco offered their condolences to the family members of the casualties.

“As Super Metro family would like to inform the public that it’s so unfortunate that one of our buses plying the Kampala-Nairobi route was involved in an accident before Awasi along Kisumu- Nairobi Highway”.

“We would wish to convey a message of condolence to the families that lost their beloved ones and quick recovery to those who are in the hospital”, Super metro added.

The accident comes shortly after the bus was issued with long-distance travel permits to allow the Sacco to operate outside Nairobi.
