Senior military officials are among eight officers who are feared dead after a Kenya Defence Forces chopper crashed at the Kaben-Cheptulel border between Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot counties.
The Kenya Air Force Huey Helicopter had taken off from a local primary school when it went down and burst into flames.
According witnesses, the chopper burst into flames on crashing.
The area was cordoned off soon after the incident.
The officers were surveying the area ahead of the planned deployment of more troops there to battle cattle rustlers.
Police initially said five officers died and three survived.
Department of Defense headquarters said a statement would be issued on the same.
Chief of Defence Forces Francis Ogolla was also aboard the ill-fated chopper.
