It is now obvious that every time Kenyans get to the streets to protest, there are always negative end results. Peaceful demonstrations are now a nightmare to Kenyans in that many end up having their property destroyed, scores injured and several lives are lost.
At least seven people are confirmed dead from the Saba Saba protests held on Friday last week when people from various parts of the country took to the streets to demonstrate against the high cost of living.
Kenyan police officers are now in the spotlight for misuse of power. Some of the officers are reportedly misusing their firearms. They are using live bullets, teargas canisters and stones to disperse unarmed crowds which is not right.
Arbitrary arrest of protestors has also become a norm in Kenya. Activists with the spirit of pushing for freedom are not free anymore. The high cost of living and passing of the Finance Act 2023 are now the push factors for protests.
Today, Azimio leader Raila Odinga and his supporters are set to demonstrate again. He urged Kenyans to come out to protest in the streets. Mr. Odinga together with his team are hoping President William Ruto’s government will prioritize the interests of Kenyans.
The Inspector General of the police Japhet Koome declared the demonstrations illegal and vowed to disperse all protestors claiming the Azimio la Umoja Coalition did not notify the police. Should there be demonstrations today, let the police also follow the law when dispersing or arresting the protestors.
All Kenyans should be protected at such times. If there is need to disperse or arrest people in the streets, let the law be followed so as to ensure there is order in the country. Security for all Kenyans should be guaranteed.
We all should learn what peaceful demonstrations are. The government should now find the best way to listen to the cries of Kenyans. Kenyans don’t have to lose themselves fighting for their rights especially in these times of economic instability. Let’s all do what is right.
