Police officers in Nyamira South sub-county are probing a case where a bar watchman was killed and his body found on a bed in one of the bar rooms.
The owner of Metro Bar in Kebirigo Town Michael Karanja was attacked by a gang of criminals who robbed him of several items including money, mobile phones and alcoholic drinks leaving him injured.
According to County Commissioner Amos Mariba, three men who posed as customers entered the bar and ordered drinks and approximately 30 minutes later turned on the owner and robbed him.
Injured and bleeding profusely, Karanja fell and as the guard intervened, the gang attacked and killed him, dragging him and laid him on one of the beds in the lodging.
“After they had left, Karanja called for help from his neighbours who came and assisted him to search for his security guard who was nowhere to be seen. He was later found lying dead on one of the beds in the room belonging to the bar, in a pool of blood,” said Mariba in a statement.
The body of the watchman John Nyankabaria 60 was found on Monday morning with several cut injuries that might have led to excessive which resulted in his death.
However, police from Nyamira police station had a difficult time trying to rescue the bar owner Michael Karanja from irate members of the public who were baying for his blood accusing him of having a hand in the death of his security guard, where police were forced to use teargas canisters to disperse the members of the public and saved Karanja from being lynched.
“While processing and documenting the scene, irate members of the public became unruly and rowdy started pelting stones to the police officers and this resulted in calling for backup. Police were forced to use teargas canisters and shot bullets to the air to disperse the rowdy members of the public,” Mariba further noted.
The body of the deceased was taken to Kinara Hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy as police investigate the matter.
