Sonko impeachment starts today at Senate

The Senate will start impeachment proceedings against Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko
today.
The impeachment proceedings will take two days.
“Pursuant to the Senate Standing Orders, on the request of the Senate Majority Leader with the
support of the requisite number of Senators, I have appointed Wednesday 16 December 2020 and
17 December 2020 as days for the special sitting of the Senate to investigate the proposed
removal from office by the impeachment of Nairobi Governor,” said Speaker Kenneth Lusaka.
Nairobi Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) have accused Sonko of gross violation of
the Constitution, abuse of office and gross misconduct.
The MCAs accuse Sonko of presiding over ‘massive loss and theft’ of public funds amounting to
Sh204. Billion. The misappropriation of funds has led to non-delivery of services to residents of
Nairobi by the Nairobi Metropolitan Services who run many operations.
Earlier, the Senators retreated to a closed briefing session ahead of the commencement of
hearing on Governor Mike Sonko’s impeachment.

The Nairobi Governor will know his fate by close of day tomorrow.
