Uganda closes schools and institutions of higher learning for six weeks as COVID-19 numbers increase

Uganda yesterday closed schools and institutions of higher learning for 42 days after recording a high number of COVID-19 cases.

“All schools should close by tomorrow (Monday). All teachers to get fully vaccinated or they shall not be allowed to teach,” said President Museveni.

Since March the number of infections has been steadily increasing with reported cases in 43 schools in 22 districts.

“The high number of infections in schools is largely attributed to poor compliance to SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures), inadequate sanitation facilities and overcrowding in some schools,” he added.

Movement from one district to another has also been suspended.

People are also advised to only carry three passengers while Boda Bodas to carry one passenger to reduce infections.

Museveni also announced the number of people at burials, vigils and funerals to not be more than 20 and should follow COVID-19 protocols.

The existing curfew will also remain in place and run from 9.00 pm to 5:30 am.
