Ann Kananu sworn in as Nairobi Deputy Governor

Ann Kananu, was today sworn in as Nairobi’s Deputy Governor following her vetting and
approval by the County Assembly this morning.
Kananu was Nairobi’s Disaster Management Chief was vetted by a 10-member panel.
The vetting process lasted close to an hour and by noon her nomination was approved by the
panel.
Nairobi’s new Deputy Governor had been nominated by impeached Governor Mike Sonko in
January. The vetting process was delayed due to a court decision challenging her nomination.
The new Deputy Governor of Nairobi has pledged to work with the Nairobi Metropolitan
Services (NMS) to transform Nairobi.
Ms Kananu expressed her joy saying “this is the day that the Lord has made that we may be glad
and rejoice in it.”
“It is with the great honour of my life to stand before you having taken the oath of office to
serve as Deputy Governor. I would first and foremost thank President Uhuru Kenyatta for
showing his faith in me to serve in this position. I would in the same vein thank Mike Mbuvi
Sonko for nominating me to this position,” she added.
Nairobi county residents were expected to go to the polls within sixty days to choose a new
Governor and Deputy Governor after Speaker Benson Mutura assumed office as Acting
Governor.
