Form four student dies in an alleged medical negligence case

A form four student died Tuesday night on what is alleged to have been caused by a case of medical negligence.

The student completed his form four exams on Monday and left for his rural home in Gesusu, Nyaribari Masaba Sub-County.

Tuesday evening he felt sick and left for Gesusu Sub County Hospital. His Hemoglobin was at 4.2 as the medical officer who attended to him concluded that he had severe anaemia and malaria. Some antibiotics were given to him.

The medical officer told him to go for further medication at Kisii Teaching and Referal Hospital. Despite having diagnosed the patient as being ill, he was allowed to go home.

Tuesday night the student felt weak and was rushed to KTRH where he pronounced dead on arrival.

A relative who didn’t want to be quoted wondered why they had to release a patient who needed admission.

“As a patient advocate, they could have insisted on admission. Why write tablets for a patient who needed admission. Again on the medication, no drug was issued even to boost his blood.”
