Former Mali PM Soumeylou Boubeye Maiga, who has been on trial for corruption charges has died aged 67.
He died at a hospital in the capital, Bamako his family said.
Mr. Maiga was previously detained under deplorable conditions and admitted in hospital in December last year though requests for medical evacuation had been refused by the military junta.
In a statement, the government said he died after a ‘long illness’ and has offered its condolences to the family.
The former Prime Minister was arrested in August last year and detained aver allegations of corruption I the purchase of a presidential jet during President Ibrahim Boubacor Keita’s regime and administration.
The charges are from 2014 when he was minister of defense.
He also served as foreign minister under President Amadou Toumani Toure in 2011.
Later on Mr. Maiga resigned as Prime Minister following the outrage over the killing of 160 Fulani civilians in April 2019 in Ogassagou, Mopti region by the suspected Dogon hunters.
