Mama Sarah Obama, the grandmother to former US President Barack Obama, has died at the age of 99 years.
She succumbed after a short illness yesterday morning at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Hospital in Kisumu. This was after she had been transferred from Avenue Hospital.
Mama Sarah had been admitted to the hospital. Her death was confirmed by the hospital CEO Dr George Rae who declined to offer more details.
Mama Sarah Obama was a Kenyan educator and philanthropist. She was the third wife of Hussein Obama, the paternal grandfather of former US president Barrack Obama.
ODM leader Raila Odinga has led other leaders to comfort the bereaved family, “In the passing of Mama Sarah Obama, we have lost a matriarch who lived ahead of her time. She single-handedly kept the family going long after the husband departed.”
On the other hand, Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang Nyong’o highlighted that Mama Sarah was very welcoming to those who visited her in her home.
He also pointed out at her as a philanthropist who helped to mobilize funds to pay school fees for many orphans and vulnerable children.
