Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Impeached

Mike Sonko was sent home after a majority of Senators voted to uphold charges that were raised
against him by members of Nairobi County Assembly.
27 Senators supported the charges while 16 were against the impeachment. Nairobi Senator
Johnson Sakaja abstained from voting.
The charges brought against Mike Sonko included abuse of office, a gross violation of the
constitution, misconduct and crimes against national law.
“The effect of the vote is that pursuant to Article 181 of the Constitution section 33 of the
County Government Act and Standing order number 75 of the Senate Standing Orders, Mike
Mbuvi Sonko, the Governor of Nairobi County stands impeached,” Lusaka declared
Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina and his Elgeyo Marakwet counterpart Kipchumba Murkomen
were among senators who voted to save Sonko .
Mike Sonko has been the Nairobi Governor for the last three years and has served without a
deputy from early 2018. Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe has resigned barely six months after
assuming office.
