Nairobi Speaker sworn in as acting governor for 60 days

Benson Mutura the Nairobi Speaker of County Assembly has been sworn in as the acting
Governor of Nairobi.
Under Article 182 4 and 5 a County Assembly Speaker assumes the Governor’s office where the
Deputy Governor is unable to take over following a vacancy.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is required by law to organise a
by-election within sixty days.
The deputy governor would have taken over as governor but Polycarp Igathe, however, resigned
in January 2018.
According to the Constitution, the speaker is second in line after the Deputy Governor.
The position was left vacant after the impeachment of Mike Sonko by the Senate on Friday.
