World Marathon Record-Holder Kelvin Kiptum To Be Laid To Rest Today

Kenya’s world marathon record-holder Kelvin Kiptum will be laid to rest today, Friday February 23, in the nation’s athletics heartland after dying in a car accident.

President William Ruto and World Athletics head Sebastian Coe are expected to be among the mourners at the funeral in the Rift Valley where Kiptum was born, trained and died.

Kiptum will be laid to rest in Naiberi, near the western Kenyan town of Eldoret in the Rift Valley, where the government is building a new home for the national hero’s family.

The venue for Kiptum’s funeral service has been moved to the Chepkorio show grounds in Keiyo South after strong winds destroyed the Chepsamo venue, occasioning damage to property on Thursday.

Kiptum met his untimely death few days prior to the anticipated Paris 2024 Olympics.
